A weekend workshop dedicated to furthering Deaf ministry in our area. Supported by Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, this workshop will be held in Flint, Michigan, utilizing a variety of facilities to help students learn religious interpreting by studying the interpretation of Scripture, Liturgies, Hymns, Sermons, Deaf culture, and other topics. Intended not only for interpreters but also individuals who want to become involved in Deaf ministry or want to explore the possibilities of establishing a Deaf ministry in their own congregations. Students will be involved in workshops which include in-class practice and real-time interpreting of church services and devotions. Students will be grouped according to skill level and interest. The workshop begins on Friday evening and will end Sunday afternoon.

Weekend Workshop This workshop weekend is intended for those who want to become better at religious interpreting as well as those individuals who want to gain a greater understanding of Deaf culture so they can assist their congregations in establishing and/or furthering a Deaf ministry. Workshop Sessions

The religious interpreting classes will include interpreting scripture, sermons, hymns, and other aspects of interpreting the worship services in ASL.Workshop sessions will also include interpreting hymns and other frozen texts such as the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer.

For those individuals who are not interested in becoming interpreters but want to be involved in Deaf ministry, sessions will be held in basic sign language as well as understanding Deaf culture, outreach activities, and contacting Deaf in the community to come to church and other activities.

Our instructors, all of whom are full-time church workers, have many years of experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Costs: The weekend workshop which includes tuition, written materials, and the motel is $275.00. This also includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday. The motel has a continental breakfast; On Saturday a “Silent” dinner will be eaten at a restaurant at the participant’s expense.

If you choose not to stay in the motel the cost will be $150.00. Scholarships are available through a grant for members of Lutheran churches. You must be registered with a deposit of $75.00 prior to March 15, 2008.
